East vs West — the most important Tsavo decision
Tsavo East and Tsavo West are separated by the Nairobi-Mombasa road and deliver genuinely different experiences. Tsavo East is larger (13,747 km²), flatter, drier, and more open — classic “big sky” savannah where large elephant herds are most visible and the red dust is most dramatic. Tsavo West is more rugged, volcanic, and varied — the Shetani Lava Flow, Mzima Springs, Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, and the Chyulu Hills create a layered landscape that feels more diverse but requires more effort to navigate.
For most first-time Tsavo visitors: start with Tsavo West (2 nights, Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava, rhino) then move to Tsavo East (2–3 nights, Aruba Dam, Galana River red elephants). The two parks are connected by road and many operators design a natural circuit. Both are accessible from Nairobi (3.5–4 hours to Mtito Andei Gate) and from Mombasa (2.5 hours to Bachuma Gate), making Tsavo East the most accessible major Kenya safari destination from the coast.
