24 conservancies — how to navigate the Laikipia landscape
Laikipia contains 24 conservancies across a plateau the size of a small European country. No other Kenya safari destination presents this degree of choice, and no other destination rewards research as richly. The character of each conservancy is genuinely distinct — Ol Pejeta is primarily conservation-driven with excellent infrastructure; Loisaba is vast and wild with the star bed concept; Il Ngwesi is 100% community-owned with the most direct land management by Indigenous people; Solio is a specialist rhino breeding reserve where both black and white rhino coexist at higher density than anywhere else in Kenya.
What unites all 24 conservancies is the freedom not available in national parks: off-road driving, night drives, walking safaris, horse riding, and camel safaris are standard across the plateau. A Laikipia safari is fundamentally a more active experience than a Mara game drive itinerary, and choosing the right conservancy means knowing which activities matter most to you.

Kicheche Laikipia Camp
Ol Pejeta · Wilderness zone · Six tents · Award-winning eco-luxury
Six tented suites tucked in Ol Pejeta’s remote wilderness zone beneath an indigenous forest canopy, overlooking a wildlife waterhole. Kicheche’s guiding standard across all their camps is exceptionally high — KPSGA Gold-certified guides with deep conservancy-specific knowledge. The camp includes rhino sanctuary visits, anti-poaching canine unit visits, and northern white rhino access as part of its programme. Night drives and mountain biking are standard. A wildlife waterhole in front of the camp produces game sightings from breakfast through dinner without leaving your seat. Independent specialists consistently rate Kicheche Laikipia among the three best camps in the entire Laikipia plateau for wildlife quality and guiding depth. One family suite available.

Porini Rhino Camp
Ol Pejeta · Rhino zone · 8 tents · Dedicated rhino conservation
Eight tented suites in a secluded valley along a seasonal river inside Ol Pejeta, positioned in the area of highest rhino activity. Solar-powered, low-impact, and explicitly dedicated to funding rhino protection through every guest’s stay. A photographic hide at a waterhole allows extended wildlife observation without vehicle proximity. Night drives, walking safaris, and the northern white rhino visit all included. The most conservation-explicit camp in Ol Pejeta — guests who stay here understand they are directly funding the anti-poaching operations that protect the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. The experience is deliberately simple and focused: this is a rhino camp, and the rhinos are always the point.

Sweetwaters Serena Camp
Ol Pejeta · Largest camp in Laikipia · Chimpanzee sanctuary access
The largest camp on the Laikipia plateau — 39 tented rooms makes it the obvious choice for groups, corporate retreats, and large families who need the capacity and infrastructure that smaller camps cannot provide. As one of only four private game reserves in Kenya, Ol Pejeta’s general wildlife density is exceptional. Sweetwaters includes the chimpanzee sanctuary visit as standard — the only one in Kenya, and one of the most educational experiences available in any Kenya safari camp. The Serena service standard provides reliability and consistency. A pool with views over the waterhole turns the hours between drives into wildlife viewing in their own right.

Mutara Camp
Mutara Conservancy · 20,000 acres · Only camp in conservancy · Rarely mentioned
On the border of Ol Pejeta inside the separate 20,000-acre Mutara Conservancy, Mutara Camp is the only lodge in its concession — complete exclusivity on 20,000 acres adjacent to one of Kenya’s most wildlife-rich areas. Cliff-top panoramic views across the Laikipia plains to Mount Kenya. Luxury canvas tents with hardwood decks, four-poster beds, soaking tubs, and glass-fronted verandas. Almost never appears in Laikipia top-ten lists despite consistent high guest ratings. For travellers who want Ol Pejeta’s wildlife combined with the absolute privacy of a sole-occupancy concession, Mutara provides exactly that at a price point below the most expensive Lewa properties.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy — pioneering conservation
Lewa House
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy · Craig family · All ages welcome · Horse riding
The original Craig family homestead, now operating as one of Kenya’s most celebrated family safari lodges — and crucially, one of very few that genuinely accepts children of all ages without restriction. The Craig family’s conservation legacy at Lewa spans over 40 years: the conservancy holds approximately 10% of Kenya’s entire black rhino population. Lewa House activities include horse riding among rhinos, giraffe, and zebra (one of the great Kenya safari experiences), camel safaris, mountain stream swimming, extensive nature education programming for children, and the full rhino tracking on foot. The lodge’s elephant corridor — built to allow elephant movement between Lewa and the Matthews Range without crossing fences — is a landmark conservation engineering achievement. The Lewa Marathon in June (world’s highest-altitude marathon) raises millions for community projects annually.

Sirikoi Lodge
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy · Private glade · Tented rooms and residences
Set in a peaceful indigenous forest glade within Lewa, Sirikoi offers the most intimate lodge experience in the conservancy — a mix of luxurious tented rooms and two private residences for families or groups wanting exclusive use. The lodge has the feel of a private home rather than a safari property: personal and unhurried, with the Lewa guiding team’s deep ecological knowledge available to very small groups. “Traditional luxury” is the consistent guest descriptor — not flash, not over-designed, but genuinely refined and attentive. One of the best Lewa lodges for couples who want seclusion without sacrificing quality.

Loisaba Conservancy — star beds and vast plains
Loisaba Tented Camp
Loisaba Conservancy · 57,000 acres · Mount Kenya views · Star beds
The flagship Loisaba property — ten tented suites on a ridge above the Loisaba Conservancy plains with views to Mount Kenya. The star beds — hand-carved wooden platforms that wheel to any position on the 57,000-acre conservancy for sleeping under an open sky — were invented at Loisaba in 1993 and remain the finest version of the concept anywhere in Kenya. The conservancy became Kenya’s newest black rhino sanctuary in 2025, adding a rhino tracking dimension to an already exceptional activity programme. Strong elephant, lion, wild dog, and Grevy’s zebra populations. Walking safaris, mountain biking, and helicopter experiences available. Maasai and Samburu community members are integral to both the staff and the conservation management.

Lodo Springs (Elewana)
Loisaba Conservancy · Eight tents · Elevated views · Recent entry
Elewana Collection’s 2019 entry into Loisaba — eight tented suites overlooking the plateau toward Mount Kenya with the Elewana group’s characteristic attention to design and service quality. Less intimate than Loisaba Tented Camp but with more consistent service infrastructure from an established hospitality group. A waterhole below the camp draws elephants and other plains game. The same star bed concept is available. Good for travellers who specifically want an Elewana Collection property in a Laikipia setting — the brand carries strong recognition and a reliable service promise.

Borana Conservancy — hillside and family excellence
Borana Lodge
Borana Ranch · Contiguous with Lewa · Hillside waterhole position
Six rooms overlooking a busy waterhole on the hillside Borana Ranch, which is now contiguous with the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (the fence between them was removed, creating a single 100,000+ acre protected landscape). The waterhole in front of the lodge is one of the most reliably productive wildlife viewing spots in Laikipia — elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and predators use it throughout the day. Horse riding is available. Multi-generational families consistently rate Borana highly: the range of activities, the wildlife access, and the balance between adventure and comfort suits mixed groups well. An outstanding option for guests who want the Lewa-Borana combined landscape without the full Lewa House price point.

Solio Game Reserve — the rhino breeding success story
Solio Lodge
Solio Game Reserve · Only lodge in reserve · Most successful rhino breeding in Kenya
Solio Game Reserve is recognised globally as the most successful private rhino breeding reserve in Kenya — a 45,000-acre sanctuary where both black and white rhinos coexist and breed successfully, producing animals that have been transferred to replenish rhino populations across East Africa. Solio Lodge is the only accommodation in the reserve — eight suites on a ranch that feels genuinely colonial in its character, with helicopter game viewing available. For travellers whose primary purpose is the most concentrated rhino viewing available anywhere in Kenya, Solio is unmatched: the rhino density here exceeds Ol Pejeta and Lewa on a per-acre basis. Rarely appears in mainstream “best of Laikipia” lists despite its extraordinary conservation credentials.

Il Ngwesi — 100% community-owned
Il Ngwesi Lodge
Il Ngwesi Group Ranch · 100% Maasai-owned and operated · Remote
The most authentically community-owned lodge on the Laikipia plateau — built by, staffed by, and entirely managed by the Il Ngwesi Maasai community. Six open-air bandas with views across the Mokogodo Forest and the plains toward Mount Kenya. The community’s conservation ethic is not a marketing position — it is the reason the wildlife on Il Ngwesi Group Ranch exists. The lodge generates the income that makes community members willing to maintain wildlife habitat rather than converting it to agriculture. Night game drives, walking safaris with community guides, and community visits that are genuinely interactive rather than performative. The most honest answer to the question “which Laikipia lodge directly benefits the community that lives on the land?” Il Ngwesi is that lodge.

Hidden and rarely mentioned gems
Ol Jogi
South Laikipia · 23,000 hectares · Ultra-luxury · Private aircraft access
Among the most exclusive and least discussed private safari properties in Kenya — Ol Jogi accommodates a maximum of 14 guests across seven private stone cottages on a 23,000-hectare ranch. Guests arrive by private aircraft from Nairobi, making the property genuinely inaccessible to anyone not booked as a guest. The conservancy holds significant wildlife populations including all Big Five, wild dog, and cheetah. A staff-to-guest ratio that exceeds most residential hotels. Almost entirely absent from travel media because the property does not seek publicity. Word-of-mouth only. The standard of food, design, and service is consistently described by the guests who have stayed as among the finest in East Africa.

Laikipia Wilderness Camp
Central Laikipia · Steve Carey · No-frills authentic bushcamp
Run by veteran safari guide Steve Carey, Laikipia Wilderness Camp is a deliberate departure from the elaborate private estate model for which Laikipia is known — five tents on a semi-permanent stream in central Laikipia, basic and genuine, with guided game viewing at a level of expertise that puts many more expensive camps to shame. Carey’s guiding reputation among experienced Kenya safari travellers is exceptional. The Mount Kenya views from camp are outstanding. Electricity is solar. Accommodation is modest. The wildlife, the walks, and the conversations by the fire in the evenings are the point. A camp for people who know what they want from a safari and don’t need infrastructure to tell them they are having a good time.

Enasoit Private Camp
Northern Laikipia · Owner-managed · Family of orphaned animals on site
Privately owned and operated by Kenya-born Pete and Karen Glover, who live on the property. The family of orphaned animals — including a zebra named Ziggy — that have been raised on the ranch creates an unusual and genuinely endearing ambient wildlife experience. The camp is small, personal, and reflects the owners’ direct involvement in every aspect of the guest experience. Northern Laikipia wildlife (elephant, reticulated giraffe, oryx, lion) is excellent. One of the most unusual and memorable small camps in Kenya for travellers who specifically want owner-managed intimacy rather than branded hospitality. Rarely appears in any list.
